The Newfoundland dog is a giant breed from Canada known for their strikingly large size and gentle, sweet-natured temperament. They have a rich history and are praised for their water rescue abilities. Their webbed feet make them excellent swimmers with an affinity for water! It’s no wonder a Newfie puppy loves playing in a baby pool!
The Newf is often referred to as the “Nanny Dog” for their devotion and watchful eye towards children. They make wonderful family companions as well as guard dogs.
These fluffy giants are admired for their patient, gentle & loving nature. Even a young Newfie puppy adores children and will be highly devoted to their families.
Their ‘big teddy bear’ personalities make them excellent companions and a great candidate as a therapy dog. Not to mention, Newfoundland puppies are just the cutest fluff balls you’ll ever meet!
According to the American Kennel Club, the breed standard for an AKC Newfoundland says that ‘a sweet temperament is the "most important single characteristic of the breed."’
Famous for their charming personalities and giant size, the Newfoundland dog was initially bred as a water rescue dog for fishermen in the icy North Atlantic waters. But just how big do these dogs get and when do they stop growing? Let’s discuss.
Being a giant breed, most Newf’s won’t reach their adult size until close to 2 years of age.
Males should reach an adult weight between 130-150 lbs, with females typically ranging from 100-120 lbs.
Males are generally close to 28” as an adult, with females closer to 26”. They will be heavy boned and carry themselves with dignity.
The Newfoundland is incredibly intelligent and easy to work with. They respond well to positive training methods and are always eager to please their owners. It’s important to start basic training & leash walking as a puppy because of their large size. This will make your life easier down the road.
We recommend signing up for a puppy class, which will also help socialize them to strange pets. The AKC offers training programs as well where your Newfie puppy can work up to earning titles. We’re happy to recommend a qualified trainer when you’re ready!

Their soulful eyes & all that fluff make a Newfie puppy absolutely irresistible!!
Newfoundland puppies thrive when they’ve been exposed to various types of socialization from an early age. And that’s why we begin working with & loving on them from day one.
These dogs do best in the company of their people, and should not be left alone for extended periods of time. Beginning training early on will help your Newfie puppy grow into a confident adult dog.
